Some of the Heisman trophy favorites have excelled to open the season while others have endured their share of struggles.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler has had a rough start to the season for his standards. He has thrown for 6 touchdowns and over 500 yards through two games entering Saturday. However, he has thrown a couple of picks and has not looked as sharp as last season. So is there reason to panic for the 20 year old?

“We just gotta be cleaner, gotta be sharper. I gotta be better. Everybody’s gotta be better,” Rattler stated in an interview with Oklahoma Daily’s Austin Curtright. So if he is not worried, should we be concerned? Well, Rattler had a star-esque season in 2020 by totaling over 3,100 yards passing and added 28 touchdown passes. He has shown the ability to dominate at the position and a couple of subpar games should not hinder our opinions of Rattler.

The Sooners have title aspirations, and standing in their way are the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Nebraska is 2-1 entering Saturday, and would love to hand Oklahoma their first loss of the season. This will be a huge game if Rattler can lead his team to a victory.

Starting a season out 3-0 is a huge confidence boost regardless of what sport you are talking about. But in college football, many 3-0 teams go on to have very successful seasons. Rattler can also silence any doubters if he posts big numbers against Nebraska.

The current Heisman odds update has Alabama quarterback Bryce Young listed at number one at +275. Ole Miss QB Matt Corral is second sitting at +400. Then Rattler checks in at +700 as the third overall favorite.

So the fact that even after a couple of rough outings Rattler is still third speaks to his overall talent. If he performs up to his superstar capabilities over the next couple of games he will be able to pass Corral and give Young a run for his money as well.

And given the performance Rattler showed a season ago, there is no reason to believe he can’t be even better in 2021 once he settles in.

If Rattler leads Oklahoma to a successful season, the odds will be in his favor. Yes, Bryce Young plays for Alabama and will receive plenty of national attention. However, that may work against him since his team is already expected to win.

Rattler could play the role of underdog and upset the odds. We need to remember that it is still extremely early in the 2021 campaign and there is plenty of time for players like Rattler to pick things up. If he is able to post numbers similar to last year, he might be on his way to a Heisman Season.
