No. 1 – Alabama Crimson Tide
Not much of a surprise here as for the last decade the Crimson Tide have been the face of college football. Last weekend the Crimson Tide went into the swamp and escaped the Florida Gators in a 31-29. This game showcased some of the Bama flaws and especially on the defensive end of the ball.
The Tide looked physically exhausted in the second half of this game and struggled to contain the Gators rushing attack. The Tide get somewhat of a break in their next game against Southern Mississippi before taking on Ole’ Miss. This team is vulnerable at the moment with some areas that need fixed. Nick Saban is one of the great football minds and will get his team right and back to being the dominant Tide that football fans love to hate. This is why Bama holds the one spot.
No. 2 – Penn State Nittany Lions
If you check other rankings you will find the Nittany Lions right at No. 5 or just on the outside looking in but I love this team on paper. Not many teams have been tested quite like the Nittany Lions through the first three games of the season. The Nittany Lions have big wins over Wisconsin and Auburn and are just getting ready to start Big Ten play.
This team is led by a ton of talent that include Quarterback Sean Clifford and Jahan Dotson who is usually the best player on the field every time this team takes the field. The Nittany Lions have some cleaning up to do on the defensive end but it’s serviceable as the season continues to progress.
While I may be overvaluing this team, it looks like a playoff contender and a team that can push Alabama for the top spot in the country.
No. 3 – Georgia Bulldogs
Stetson Bennett was the headline in the Bulldogs win two weeks ago. Bennett tied a school record with five touchdowns in a 56-7 win over UAB. Following that game JT Daniels returned to the line up throwing for 300 yards with three touchdowns in a 40-13 win over South Carolina.
Having a problem at quarterback like the Bulldogs do is always a good problem to have. This team plays in arguably the best conference in college football and this year has a real chance at dethroning the Crimson Tide and winning the conference. They should get two matchups with Alabama this year so those would be games to circle on your calendar as they never seem to disappoint.
No. 4 – Iowa Hawkeyes
The second team from the Big Ten to grace the rankings are the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Haweyes feature one of the best offenses in the nation and when they are clicking look like a playoff contender.
Against Kent State the Hawkeyes were a force putting up 440 yards of total offense and 30 points. The defense was strong on the day coming away with seven sacks. Hawkeye running back Tyler Goodson has 153 yards with a couple of touchdowns as the Hawkeyes cruised to their third consecutive win.
The Big Ten like the SEC has a load of really good teams. With the heart of conference play about to get started as fall has officially begun this is one of the more interesting teams to watch in the rankings. Penn State, Ohio State, and both Michigan teams look more than capable of getting a win against this team but thanks to the offensive explosion they find themselves at No. 4 after three weeks.
No. 5 – Oregon Ducks
The PAC-12 makes its appearance with the Oregon Ducks coming in at No. 5. This team is coming off a win over Stony Brook but it took some time to put the game away. Anthony Brown threw for 159 yards with a touchdown. Head coach Mario Cristobal pulled Brown early to get some reps for his backup quarterbacks thanks to this game being a blowout once the Ducks turned it on.
The PAC-12 is not what it used to be but it still has some strong teams that could push the Ducks for the crown. The Ducks look good on paper and that’s why they find themselves in the top 5. With a lot of season left they will need to show more and earn a few quality wins to be considered playoff contenders but they drop two spots from where they started the season at No. 3.
