As I continue to put out top-five NFL positional lists during the offseason, I will now be transitioning over to the defense, and talking about my top 5 Edge Rushers in the NFL. One of the most important positions in football. No defensive position earns more money come contract time than a sack artist, as plenty of teams have won the Super Bowl on the back of their pass-rushing ability and edge presence. Here are my Top 5 edge rushers in the NFL.
One of the biggest names to swap teams in free agency, Khalil Mack is looking to pick up right where he left off after a dominant stint with the Chicago Bears. The 2015 Defensive Player of the Year is one of the best sack artists in all of football, and has been the best player on a very good Chicago Bears defense since 2018.
In Los Angeles, Mack has his best opportunity to win a title in his career, and I am sure he will not let this opportunity go to waste. Mack remains one of the most physically impressive defenders in football, and has the ability to play at a high-level for a very long time.
I believe that Cameron Jordan is one of those underrated players in football, regardless of position. After another 12.5 sack season in 2021, Jordan has been a mainstay on one of the league’s best defenses over the past half a decade.
Jordan is easily the oldest person on this list at 32 years old, yet the veteran shows no signs of slowing down his production, Already eclipsing the hundred sack mark for his career. Cameron will continue to be one of the most valuable and underappreciated defenders in the entire NFL, and has a quiet case to get a Hall of Fame jacket one day.
The second half of the best pass rushing duo in the NFL, Joey Bosa terrorized quarterbacks of the AFC since entering the league in 2016. Just like his younger brother, Bosa has been a technician from the outside, racking up double digit sack seasons effortlessly.
Alongside newly acquired Khalil Mack, the former Buckeye should be seeing the least amount of attention since being in the NFL. I expect big numbers from Joey Bosa next year, including a possible defensive player of the year award.
The number one overall pick from 2017, Myles Garrett is the best athlete from the defense end position in the entire NFL. His ridiculous .86 sacks per game has Garett producing at a higher rate than the great Reggie White, as his combination of power and technique makes Garrett impossible to block one on one.
Garrett has compiled over 10 sacks in four of his five first seasons, and accumulated 58.5 since entering the league. He remains a very young player at 26 years old, and he is the cornerstone for a Browns franchise that looks to win a Super Bowl in the near future.
The 2021 defensive player of the year and the younger half of the best defensive football family of all time, TJ Watt makes a real case to be even a better player than his brother. Despite missing three games last season, Watt still managed to tie the single-season sack record with the Pittsburgh Steelers at 22.5, and was an integral piece to the team’s late playoff push.
Since 2020, no player has more sacks than T.J. Watt with 37. His skill set does not stop at pass rushing either, as Watt is one of the best run stuffers from the outside linebacker position and second to none at deflecting passes at the line of scrimmage.
Players such as Myles Garrett, Joey Bosa, and even younger ends like Chase Young will be vying for this crown in the coming years, but for now, T.J. Watt is the best edge rusher in all of football.
