The Browns’ once promising quarterback is now all but gone from Cleveland. Read to find out where Baker Mayfield could end up playing in 2022.
Three Potential Baker Mayfield Landing Spots
Baker Mayfield’s relationship with the Cleveland Browns has hit the point of no return recently. Even Mayfield himself acknowledged this.
After the Browns officially traded for quarterback Deshaun Watson, they then proceeded to sign him to the largest contract in NFL history at five years/$230 million guaranteed. This understandably has Mayfield upset as he has been at the helm of the team since 2018.
In an NFL offseason that’s been filled with drama and big moves, Mayfield being traded away from Cleveland is yet another part of that. His trade to a new franchise is inevitable and will be happening sooner rather than later.
Let’s take a look at a few potential suitors for the former Heisman Trophy winner.
The Seahawks made their big quarterback move when they dealt Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in return for a slew of picks as well as tight end Noah Fant and Broncos’ quarterback Drew Lock.
Seattle is clearly playing for the long-term but one has to wonder how long their fans are going to accept that. Lock is not a sustainable option under center if the Seahawks want to have any measure of success over their next few seasons.
The Seahawks may be playing in one of the best divisions in football, and are themselves in rebuild mode, but they still have a lot of talent on offense. Now that the Wilson era is over in Seattle, the Seahawks would be wise to go after Mayfield.
Mayfield is a quarterback who’s shown that he can win big games in crunch time. He may not be Russell Wilson but he has enough skill and experience at the quarterback position to succeed with weapons like D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett at his disposal.
Despite being in a rebuild, the Seahawks need to avoid the tank. They still have enough rostered talent that the addition of Mayfield could potentially garner a 9 or 10 win season.
The Panthers had a new hope instilled when they traded for former Jet Sam Darnold. After leading Carolina to a 3-0 start, Darnold quickly fell off as he dealt with injuries and ended up starting just 11 games for the Panthers in 2021.
The season went off the rails for Carolina as they finished 5-12 after their strong start to the season. Darnold isn’t a bad quarterback but he has yet to prove that he can lead a team to success.
Mayfield to the Panthers would put him on a team that has a lot of talent which is in desperate need of a quarterback with experience. Carolina could be a great fit for Mayfield whose game would certainly be elevated by having the weapons of McCaffery and Moore available to him.
Carolina has been looking for someone consistent and reliable at the quarterback position and Mayfield could provide just that. The Panthers missed out on the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes, so it’d make sense that the Browns deal Mayfield to Carolina instead.
The Falcons are suffering from a similar conundrum as the Seahawks; just without less talent. They traded away their longtime quarterback Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a third-round pick.
Right now the Falcons’ depth chart lists Marcus Mariota as the starting quarterback. Mariota has started just six games since the 2019 season. The Falcons made clear improvements from the 2020 to 2021 seasons, so rolling with Mariota would take Atlanta in the wrong direction.
Mayfield wants to play for a winner, but his being traded to the Falcons would give both him and the team an opportunity to have a fresh start. Under Mayfield’s leadership the Falcons have a chance to continue to improve as a team and potentially get back to postseason form.
