The University of Texas will be a completely revamped team from last year. Last season, Texas finished the season at 5-7, nowhere close to a playoff spot, or a top 25 ranking. However, this season is going to be different due to many factors that Texas has made in the offseason.
With a new quarterback, one of the best running backs in college football, a second-year coach looking to prove that he is one of the best in the nation, and some exciting freshman offensive linemen, Texas is the team not to sleep on this year.
On paper, it may seem that Texas doesn’t have the easiest schedule. They have one of the toughest games all season, with the second week of college football playing number one-ranked Alabama. Texas will also go up against the top 25-ranked Oklahoma, Baylor, and, and Oregon State.
However, by ESPN’s FPI, Texas is favored in every single one of those matchups except for the matchup against Alabama. This isn’t a prediction to say that Texas will be the best team in college football, or anywhere close to it, but they will be around that top 15 to 10 ranking by the end of the season. Something that nobody is predicting at the moment.
Texas already have one of the best running attacks in all of college football last season. Running Back Bijan Robinson ran for over 1,100 yards last season while missing time with a dislocated elbow. This season Robinson should be the favorite to lead the FPS in rushing yards, who is also an elite pass catcher to make for a dynamic offense..
However, it doesn’t stop there, Texas has new quarterback Quinn Ewers, the transfer from the Ohio State University as their starter. Ewers was a five-star prospect coming out of high school and was has been touted as a generational talent.
Texas’s biggest issue was not their offense, and was their defense, most notably their rushing defense. If Texas can maintain the rushing attacks in the Big 12, while displaying that they have the best rushing attack in the Big 12, they should be a favorite in almost every game they play this season.
With the amount of offensive firepower that the Longhorns have, Texas is truly being one of the teams that are slept on. Texas did not rank in the AP Top 25 Poll, and was only ranked 18th in the coaches poll. Like calling a team in the top 10 underrated, Texas is not looked at as a big 12 favorite, or possibly even a big 12 contender.
This season, Texas will not only make massive waves in the Big 12, but they will also be competing for the Big 12 championship, and they’ll have an extremely important bowl game to play in. After years and years of all experts claiming that Texas is back, it looks like they will be returning to a big stage when it’s least expected.
