NFL Week 6 had it all: marquee match-ups, surprise road wins, and signs of renewed strength from teams who have been dormant for a while. Let’s take a look at some of the compelling storylines coming out of the week.

New York City: A Football Town Again?

Football in New York City is back! The Jets and Giants are both coming off notable wins in Week 6. The Jets went into Lambeau Field and beat Aaron Rodgers and the Packers 27-10. The Giants came back from double digits at home against the Ravens to win 24-20. New York football fans are hopeful that the city’s playoff drought will be broken. The Giants haven’t been in the playoffs since the infamous “Miami Trip” photo in 2016. The Jets haven’t been to the playoffs since 2010.

5-1 New York Giants

The Giants have a new energy and direction this NFL season, driven by new head coach Brian Daboll. He has the Giants playing resilient football, demonstrated by their 5 comeback wins this year. Three of those comeback wins came when the Giants were down at least 10 points.

Daboll’s Giants are built on NFL fundamentals like defense and running the ball. The defense is top 10 in the NFL in allowing red zone conversions and third-down conversions. Saquon Barkley leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage with 771 yards.

4-2 New York Jets

The New York Jets also have a swagger about them after this week’s win vs the Packers. The story of the Jets is similar to the Giants – Robert Saleh has instilled a sense of toughness that was missing with previous coaches.
The Jets’ recent success has been driven by an emerging defense. Saleh has improved this unit dramatically. Last year, the Jets were the worst defense in the league. Through six games, the Jets are currently ranked ninth in total defense.

The Jets offense has lots of potential, with multiple players poised for breakout seasons. They’re still trying to find consistent production across the offense. Breece Hall is emerging as a dual threat in the passing and running game. Zach Wilson is still finding his footing as a franchise quarterback. Rookies like Elijah Moore are capable of turning into home run hitters if they can get the ball consistently enough.

Playoff Hopes

Giants and Jets fans are both hoping that their team will make the playoffs. Unfortunately, both play in extremely competitive divisions. The Giants are staring up at the undefeated Eagles and the Cowboys who haven’t slipped up in Dak Prescott’s NFL absence. The Jets are staring up at the Bills, the not full-strength Dolphins, and the always-resilient New England Patriots.

It will be a disappointment if both NFL teams don’t break their NFL playoff streak. New York football fans, regardless of team, should be filled with hope & optimism for the future. Things are finally turning around in the Big Apple!
