It Is Time to Show Some Respect for Jameis

Two seasons ago, Jameis Winston threw for 5,000 yards. But, that wasn’t the most shocking thing about his statline. He wound up tossing 30 interceptions as well. All he did was chuck the ball deep and hope his guys could make the catches.

He also tossed 33 TD passes, but the picks had the team in trouble often, as they went 7-9. He went to New Orleans after that, and Tom Brady brought a Super Bowl to Tampa in year one.

But, let’s talk about current Jameis. He deserves some respect.

Sunday marked Jameis Winston’s first NFL start in two years, and his first time leading the show with the Saints. Taysom Hill got the job after the injury to Drew Brees a season ago, but this time, Winston won the job and it’s now his to lose, which he probably won’t.

Winston threw the ball just 20 times in a surprisingly dominant win over Green Bay. He threw for only 148 yards on 14 completions. Nine of those went for first downs, though. Now, it’s time for the most impressive stat.

He threw five TD passes without an interception. Pause. Jameis Winston had zero interceptions. That in and of itself is a sign of major improvement, and shows that in the right system, you can flourish.

The five TD passes were extra incredible, given that they came against last season’s NFC runner-up. Winston looks locked in and like a major season is ahead of him.

A Lot to Prove

In 2018, Winston was benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick in the middle of the year. And he never fully gained his job back, going from QB1 to QB2 from week-to-week. When he regained the role in 2019, it was clear he wanted to be better.

All the picks aside, he was very good. It’s too bad that you can’t just remove the picks, though. He is a guy who was an all-or-nothing type of QB. Go for everything or just take the hit.

With a new system and a tremendous roster around him, there is some pressure to win. And he’s definitely ready for it all.

He Got His Eyes Fixed

Prior to the start of the 2020 season, Jameis Winston had LASIK eye surgery. His vision had been a hindrance on the football field for a number of years, and he finally found the time to take care of things.

And now that he did, we have begun to see some of the results. It is no surprise that he was o turnover prone in the first leg of his career, given he was probably seeing double and everything was likely blurry.

The surgery made things crystal clear for him. And now Winston is in position to appear in a playoff game for the first time. This is a guy with an incredible arm. He does not give good speeches, not by any means. But that aside, he’s ready to lead. This is his team. And he’s going to make sure folks respect the name Jameis. He’s famous, after all.

Sports Writer by day, Sports Broadcaster by night. When I’m not doing either of these things, I’m probably playing pickup basketball at the park, or watching whatever NBA game is on the evening’s slate. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t try and learn more about the players in today’s league, as well as the history of them. I’m considered to be an anomaly with my sports fandoms as a Cavaliers, Ravens and Nationals fan.
