With one football game left in the 2022 NFL season, football fans are thinking about draft boards and wondering what their team needs so that they can play on the last Sunday of the football season.
The Chicago Bears hold the number-one pick in the draft after finishing the season with the worst statistical record. The number-one draft pick is the best thing that has happened to Bears fans in years.
In a draft ripe with quarterbacks, the Bears do not need one. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields threatened opposing offenses with his arm & legs. For once, the Bears do not need to draft a quarterback. They can use the pick to shore up another area of their team.
They could also trade the pick and request a bounty in return. The Bears are taking phone calls from the rest of the NFL to see what they can get. With those draft picks and $108 million under the salary cap, the Bears could be one of those teams that go from worst to first.
The draft isn’t until April 2023, so there’s time for suitors to emerge. Two teams are most interested in trading for the number-one pick.
Indianapolis Colts: Hot on Will Levis?
The Indianapolis Colts had stability at the quarterback position for almost two decades between Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck. Since 2019, the Colts have opted for a different strategy with quarterbacks, pulling free agents off the pile like Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan, and Carson Wentz.
With a great quarterback class in 2023, the rumors are that the Colts are interested in Kentucky quarterback Will Levis. The Colts have a top-five pick they could include as part of a package. The Colts have significant draft capital across to offer a potentially attractive package.
The Bears’ head coach is former Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Knowing the type of defense he runs from his days in Indianapolis, leaving him the pick to draft the edge rusher he wants.
Houston Texans: New Head Coach & Need a Quarterback
The Texans helped the Bears finish first for the top pick by beating the Colts in Week 18. The Texans offer a less robust draft package but have players on their roster that they could add to the trade for the Bears.
Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil’s contract is expiring this year. Tunsil wants to reset the market when it comes to left tackles. Tunsil has been injured over the last couple of years, and going all-in on a Pro Bowl-quality left tackle for your emerging star quarterback is rarely a bad idea.
