The Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Chargers are the teams that make up the AFC west. Each of these AFC teams was set with high expectations going into the season, with the AFC west being anticipated to be a top division in the league.
After an exciting off-season from all of these teams, each one has seemed to subvert expectations as the super bowl grows closer. As teams continue to rise and fall throughout the season, the AFC west should continue to be interesting.
Denver Broncos
When Russell Wilson signed with the Denver Broncos, it was one of the most significant actions in the 2022 off season. After leaving the Seattle Seahawks, many Denver fans believed the 2022-23 season was going to be the return of the Denver Broncos. Sadly this was not the case, as the Broncos currently sit at last in the conference.
Russell Wilson has been struggling, being ranked sixteenth in the NFL for passing yards. Wilson’s struggles have led the Broncos to a rough record, while the Seahawks have been flourishing with Geno Smith. If the Broncos are able to get their offense in check, they would be set up for a super bowl appearance.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers had extremely high expectations going into the season; they were expected to have one of the best offenses in the league, led by Justin Herbert. The Chargers now stand at a perfect .500 while looking solid. Although they did not meet the expectations most media and fans had for them, the Chargers have looked to have a very high ceiling.
The Chargers dominated the free agency in the off-season, improving their defense from the year before. After picking up an edge, cornerback, and two defensive tackles the Chargers defense looked set. If Justin Herbert is able to continue to improve, the Chargers could make significant improvements.
Las Vegas Raiders
The Green Bay Packers shocked the league when complications with Davante Adams’s contract would lead them to trading him to the Las Vegas Raiders. This would pair up quarterback Derek Carr and one of if not the best wide receivers in the NFL in Davante Adams.
Things looked promising for the Raiders as Carr and Adams already had a connection after playing at Fresno State in college. The Raiders now stand third in the conference and hope for this pair to improve.
Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes has proved many narratives wrong this season, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to the top of the AFC west. After losing Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in the off-season the Chiefs offense lacked an elite-level receiver.
This was no problem for Patrick Mahomes, as he has played at an MVP level throughout each game. Pair that with the outstanding performances by the Chiefs defense, and this team has a great chance at winning the super bowl.
