Ravens a Contender?

____Ravens a Contender

There is a lot of talent around the AFC, and so the early season results have been wild. The Bills have looked like an incredible team, while the Chargers got off to a 4-1 beginning. Cincy is 4-2 to this point and has been very tough to slow down for most clubs.

And then, you have the Chiefs surprisingly at 3-3. The Ravens are sitting at 5-1, looking fantastic on the offensive side of the ball. Given all the injuries they have, the start has been incredible.

So, it begs the question. Are they finally a Super Bowl contender again?

Lamar Jackson Looking Incredible

When Baltimore went 14-2 two years ago, ending the season with 14 wins in a row after an 0-2 start, they looked like the team to beat. But when the playoffs started, they had to face right off with KC. And they took the loss when the game did actually get played. And then the year after, Lamar Jackson went ahead and defeated the Titans for his first playoff win.

Jackson had one of the most impressive passing performances in a long time when he completed 37 of 43 for over 440 yards against the Colts. All he did was drive them down the field for TD’s. Against the Chargers, he did throw a few picks. But, he did get back to running it effectively.

Even with the “off” game, the team defeated L.A. 34-6. A win that nobody saw coming, not like that at least. A Bolts team that had won three in a row was not supposed to just come out and get blown out. As long as he is continuing to lock in, the team will be hard to beat.

Defense Doing Just Enough

Don’t tell Ravens fans that they have anything to complain about. Marcus Peters is one of many defensive players to miss time in 2021, and he isn’t coming back. The team being short-handed in the secondary hasn’t burned them too much, thanks to Marlon Humphrey.

He is one of the best DB’s in the league and is continuing to produce. The team could not be luckier to have him, and he loves being there as a player, too. The safeties DeShon Elliott and Chuck Clark have been making plays all over the place as well. Each of them are looking really dominant.

They don’t get sacks that often, but whenever they need them. The defense has recovered just two fumbles, and they only have four INT’s. But, they always come right when they need them. They have held three different teams under 300 total yards of offense.

As the season winds on, look for them to continue to make timely plays.

Great Coaching

Say all the negative things you want about Greg Roman. In the regular season, everything he calls works. He has Lamar looking like a brand new QB, and the “running back” jokes seem to be on hold.

John Harbaugh is looking like an elite coach. His fourth-down decision against the Chiefs gave his team a statement win in week 2, helping the team avoid a potential 0-2 beginning. Harbaugh has the respect of his peers, and a strong relationship with his QB.

There is no question that he will be a finalist for Coach of the Year.

NO DOUBT, that this team is a contender.

I’m considered to be an anomaly with my sports fandoms as a Cavaliers, Ravens and Nationals fan.
